We asked 100 working scientists to name the single hardest unsolved problem in their field. The answers were rarely tidy — they ranged from the chemistry of life itself to the limits of human progress.

Several respondents returned to questions of consciousness and the physical basis of memory, describing decades of work that have produced sharper instruments but no consensus on mechanism.

Others pointed outward, toward biology's remaining gaps: how life began from non-living chemistry, how genomes encode more than the proteins they specify, and whether consciousness is an inevitable consequence of complex organisation.

Taken together the responses sketch an unusual picture of science in 2026 — extremely productive at narrowing questions, and strikingly candid about the distance still left to travel.
