Researchers reported a new classical-computing technique that reduces the security margin of the RSA public-key system faster than methods previously described. The work challenges the traditional focus on factoring RSA's large composite number and arrives before practical quantum computers are expected to threaten current cryptography. The result does not immediately break deployed RSA keys, but it could accelerate the weakening of RSA protections and increase pressure to adopt post-quantum algorithms.
