The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel for their work on light-gated ion channels — the discovery that made optogenetics possible.

Optogenetics is the technique of activating individual neurons using flashes of light. By engineering microbial proteins that respond to specific wavelengths and inserting them into target cells, the three laureates gave neuroscientists a way to switch brain circuits on and off with surgical precision.

The breakthrough transformed what laboratories can ask. Researchers can now trace the contribution of single cells to behaviour, map the circuits behind reward and fear, and probe the mechanism of psychiatric illness in ways that were previously impossible.

The prize also underlines how far the field has moved: what began as a search for a single light-sensitive ion has become one of the most productive techniques in modern biology.
