Lost Grounds: The Football Stadiums That Built Their Reputation, Changed the Game — and Were Left Behind

Some football grounds are remembered less for what happened on the pitch than for what they made possible off it. A new generation of infrastructure has changed how clubs build, finance and move.

From terraces built in the industrial era to stands raised behind goals rather than along them, the grounds of the mid-20th century solved a different set of problems from those facing stadiums today.

Many are now too small, too hemmed in by housing, or simply too costly to keep standing. Demolition is rarely practical, and heritage listing can make redevelopment impossible.

The result is an odd half-life: a stock of venues that remain culturally significant, commercially difficult and increasingly unable to host the game that made them famous.
