Sri Lanka levelled the one-day international series at 1-1 after a 321 for six total at Headingley, led by captain Kusal Mendis' unbeaten 121, and England fell short by 16 runs. Jos Buttler played through injury to try to steer England home but could not prevent the defeat, leaving the hosts needing a result in the third match to retain the series. Mendis' century proved the difference on a surface England found hard to break.
