Weeks before Israel's election on October 27, Dan Perry, former Associated Press chief in Europe, Africa and the Middle East, says security will always be paramount for Israeli voters. But he says the October 7 responsibility question is less effective against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu than might be expected. Perry says other issues are critical to Israel's future, including what to do with the fast-growing ultra-Orthodox Haredi population, which does not join the army, and what he calls Netanyahu's efforts to turn Israel into an elected dictatorship. On Gaza, Perry says many Israelis discuss the destruction there, but not with the introspection he would like. He says most Israelis frame October 7 through their own victimisation and believe Hamas deliberately invited civilian harm. Perry says security concerns have made Israelis far less willing to risk a peace process, and that most would give up the West Bank if they did not fear attack from strategic high ground. He calls settler violence a disgrace and says the government's connivance is shameful. Britain's Conservative Party is holding its annual conference in Birmingham, fighting to be the main voice of the Right. Not long ago it looked close to collapse, but some projections now have it level with the anti-immigration Reform UK. In Newark, Nottinghamshire, the sitting MP Robert Jenrick, a former Conservative minister, defected to Reform UK in January. The party has suffered since its worst-ever defeat to Labour in 2024, and Reform was already ahead in the polls. One local voter said people dislike both Labour and the Conservatives and see Reform as the only alternative. Recent polls paint a mixed picture. In September, YouGov suggested the Conservatives and Reform would be nearly tied, with Labour the biggest party. Al Jazeera's Rory Challands reports from Newark-on-Trent. The entry of Badruddin Ajmal has changed the shape of the contest. Instead of a direct BJP-Congress battle, the AIUDF chief is now campaigning across Nagaon himself, attacking both major parties and projecting his party as an independent alternative. Ajmal has repeatedly claimed that he can win the seat and has questioned the electoral prospects of both Sharma and Bora. He has also targeted Sharma over his political transition from the civil service, while taking aim at Congress leaders, particularly Rakibul Hussain. Ajmal's presence has brought the question of vote division to the centre of the campaign. In the 2024 Lok Sabha election, AIUDF's candidate received nearly 8.9 per cent of the vote in Nagaon. Congress leaders have argued that an AIUDF campaign could divide votes opposed to the BJP. AIUDF has rejected that interpretation and maintained that its campaign is independent. The BJP, meanwhile, has sought to put both Congress and AIUDF on the same political canvas during its campaign. #Assam #AssamPolls #Badruddin #AIUDF #AssamNews #BadruddinAjmal About NDTV (English news channel): NDTV is India's Most-Trusted News Broadcaster with the latest updates in news, sports, entertainment and much more from within India and around the world.
The decisive variable may be one neither party controls. Turnout among low-propensity voters in a few battlegrounds will determine whether these late moves matter or merely make the map look closer than it is.
