Ineos said it would mothball three chemical plants in Hull, affecting up to 1,000 direct jobs and about 3,000 more in the supply chain. The company blamed UK gas prices, which it said were twelve times US levels and eight times Chinese coal-based production costs. Workers will remain employed while Ineos seeks cheaper U.S. liquefied natural gas or waits for prices to fall. The sites make chemicals used in medicines, clothing, detergents, paint, construction and explosives.
