Global debt climbed $10 trillion in the first half to top $365 trillion, according to the Institute of International Finance, as yields on medium and long-dated government bonds in the US, Japan, France and the UK hit decade highs. Advanced economies paid over $3.3 trillion in interest last year, exceeding combined global spending on AI, defence and clean energy. The IIF warns of a vicious cycle between elections, short-term fixes and growing long-term vulnerability.
