The party has suffered since its worst-ever defeat to Labour in 2024, and Reform was already ahead in the polls. The entry of Badruddin Ajmal has changed the shape of the contest. Instead of a direct BJP-Congress battle, the AIUDF chief is now campaigning across Nagaon himself, attacking both major parties and projecting his party as an independent alternative. Ajmal has repeatedly claimed that he can win the seat and has questioned the electoral prospects of both Sharma and Bora. He has also targeted Sharma over his political transition from the civil service, while taking aim at Congress leaders, particularly Rakibul Hussain. Ajmal's presence has brought the question of vote division to the centre of the campaign. In the 2024 Lok Sabha election, AIUDF's candidate received nearly 8.9 per cent of the vote in Nagaon. Congress leaders have argued that an AIUDF campaign could divide votes opposed to the BJP. AIUDF has rejected that interpretation and maintained that its campaign is independent. <p>With 29 days to go before the midterms, the picture is contested in ways that were not obvious a year ago: some Republican districts are moving, and several Democratic ones are not.</p>

<p>The Senate is the likelier chamber to flip, though a handful of states will decide it. A small number of candidates in unexpected places &mdash; including a South Carolina race most Democrats treat as a long shot &mdash; have turned races that were written off.</p>
</section>
<section>
<p>The House is the closer contest. Democrats are competitive across many more districts, but their ceiling has repeatedly proved lower than their floor, and incumbents in unwinnable places remain in the count.</p>
</section>
<section>
<p>The decisive variable may be one neither party controls. Turnout among low-propensity voters in a few battlegrounds will determine whether these late moves matter or merely make the map look closer than it is.</p>

<p>The projections follow two cycles in which the number of Democratic women in the chamber rose. This year&rsquo;s field is larger, and several of its members are contesting seats that were long considered unwinnable.</p>

<p>A significant strategic element has been the party&rsquo;s willingness to clear primary challenges to incumbent women, an obstacle that removed several potential nominees in previous cycles.</p>
