Olympic Council of Asia President Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani said politicians should remain out of sport at the Asian Games after a dispute involving Taiwan minister Lee Yang. Lee was initially denied entry to a flag-raising ceremony, prompting Taiwan’s delegation to withhold participation until he was admitted more than an hour after the scheduled time. Sheikh Joaan said the Games should focus on athletes, equal competition rights, and freedom, while OCA director general Husain Al-Musallam said the ceremony was for participants rather than government delegations.
