Anthropic said its Claude artificial-intelligence system autonomously discovered a previously uncharacterized enzyme system in bacteriophages, a virus that infects bacteria. The company said nearly 950 agents analyzed DNA-sequence data for 21 hours before identifying an unusual repeating pattern for human review. Scientists then performed further analysis and laboratory testing. Anthropic compared the finding to mechanisms behind Crispr, but said the practical applications and biological function of the enzyme system remain unclear.
