Derby City Council and Derbyshire County Council agreed to decommission the mothballed Sinfin waste-treatment site after a long campaign against the project. The incinerator was never used and reportedly cost taxpayers about £147 million, including a later settlement with the company involved. Campaigners said the decision ended a dispute that had lasted roughly two decades. The councils said removing the site would protect council taxpayers and that they would explore longer-term arrangements for household waste.
