India proposes royalties for AI training data
India is taking a major step toward regulating how artificial intelligence companies use online content to train their AI models. A government-appointed panel has proposed a framework that could require large AI firms to pay royalties to content creators whose work is used during AI training.
The proposal comes amid growing concerns from publishers, writers, artists, and digital platforms that generative AI systems are being trained on large volumes of copyrighted material without permission or compensation. If adopted, the regulation would apply to both domestic and international AI companies operating in India.

Why the proposal matters
Generative AI tools depend heavily on text, images, videos, and other openly available digital content. Much of this content is created by journalists, researchers, authors, and independent creators. Indian policymakers believe that without fair payment systems, creators bear the cost while AI companies generate revenue from their work.
The government sees this proposal as an effort to restore balance between innovation and intellectual property rights.

Key objectives of the proposed framework
• Ensure fair compensation for content creators and publishers • Increase transparency in AI training practices • Balance innovation with intellectual property protection • Build a sustainable digital content ecosystem

Impact on global AI companies
Major international companies such as OpenAI, Google, and Meta could be affected if the framework is implemented. These firms may be required to disclose the categories of data used during model training and contribute to a royalty-sharing mechanism managed by regulators or industry bodies.
India’s move reflects a broader global shift toward tighter AI regulation, with similar discussions already underway in Europe and other regions.

Supporters and critics
Supporters argue that the proposal will help protect creative industries and promote responsible AI development. They believe clear compensation rules will improve trust between technology companies and content creators.
Critics warn that implementing royalty systems could be complex and may slow innovation. Some industry experts also fear that strict rules could increase costs for startups and smaller companies.

What happens next
The proposal is still under consultation and will include input from AI firms, content creators, legal experts, and industry groups. If approved, India could become one of the first major economies to formally link AI training with mandatory creator compensation.

India is weighing new rules that would make companies like OpenAI and Google share revenue with creators when their work is used to train AI models.

Volume and Value Growth

The growth in volume was mainly due to healthy inventory levels and the low base of Q1 2023.
Meanwhile, the increase in value was propelled by the trend of premiumization and the introduction of new models like the Samsung Galaxy S24 and OnePlus 12 series.

The premium segment, comprising smartphones priced above INR 30,000, reached its highest-ever volume share of 20% and contributed 51% to the total market value in Q1 2024.
Shilpi Jain, Senior Research Analyst, highlighted that India’s smartphone market achieved its highest-ever Q1 value during the quarter. This growth was fueled by consumers upgrading to higher-value smartphones across various price tiers, supported by factors like affordable financing, trade-in offers, bundled schemes, and the demand for advanced features such as AI, gaming, and enhanced imaging.

India’s smartphone shipments saw a notable increase in Q1 2024, with a volume growth of 8% year-on-year (YoY) Smartphone Tracker.

When Alphabet Inc. Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai steps onto the stage at the company’s annual developer conference on Tuesday, which is set to take place at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, California, he may try to make a case for how Google continues to leverage AI, bringing it to its most popular products that are used by billions of people every day. Pichai would leave no opportunity to drive the message that “AI” and “generative AI” are crucial to its developers, consumers, analysts, and investors. Pundits are in agreement that Google needs to impress if it wants to keep its title as the most innovative technology company – and if it wants to continue to be at the center of the tech ecosystem through Android, the app store, the search engine, and huge developer support.
Google's I/O, like other developer conferences, is largely focused on the platforms for which app makers and developers build. It’s not often aimed directly at consumers, but Google uses its annual developer conference to bring meaningful updates to its core apps, services, and operating systems, spanning Android, Gmail, Chrome, Photos, Workspace, and others that are of consumer interest as well. This year won’t be too different, and it’s possible Google will announce new software updates at this year’s conference, keeping up with the trend of past conferences.

Perhaps the biggest announcements at Google I/O will revolve around AI or artificial intelligence, as it has been the focus of the entire tech industry for the past few months. Pichai and Co. will demonstrate how AI powers every product Google currently offers and what’s coming in the future. Industry insiders expect Google’s deep investments in artificial intelligence to be showcased at its annual developer conference this week.

The Apple Watch Series 8 release date is around the corner and this year we could see a new rugged “Pro” version with a larger screen join the lineup, and fresh health features. Apple Watch Series 8 will likely be available to pre-order in just a matter of weeks. Head below for what to expect on a release date, new features, and more.

Apple Watch launches over the years

Outside of the original Apple Watch arriving in April 2015, Apple has unveiled every hardware update to its wearable in September. Apple traditionally announces the new Apple Watch models along with the fall iPhone event. One exception to that was 2020 when Apple Watch 6 and SE were unveiled in September and iPhone 12 was announced in October.

Apple Watch Series 8 release date

Apple has a strong history of holding its iPhone and Apple Watch events on the first or second Tuesday in September.
But with Labor Day falling on Monday, September 5 this year, the Apple Watch Series 8 release date is most likely September 13 – that is if there aren’t any unexpected delays.

With Apple Watch Series 7, pre-orders came about a month after the product was announced, but with Series 6, orders were available immediately. We’ll have to wait and see what happens with Apple Watch Series 8 availability.

What we know about Apple Watch Series 8

Of course, Apple Watch Series 8 will come with Apple’s newest software, watchOS 9. That brings features like new and updated watch faces, brand-new running metrics in the Workout app, and improved sleep tracking.

Also, with the assistance of the Fridge Manager feature, which monitors the status of the water filter in the refrigerator and sends an alert when a replacement is needed.

Appliance screen functionality does not stop there. Samsung’s new Anyplace Induction Cooktop and Slide-in Range are each equipped with a 7” LCD screen, where users can view the recipes that were selected and saved from the Family Hub™+ to assist their meal preparation. Apple could finally ditch the lightning connector and offer a USB Type C port for charging with the iPhone 15 series. This projection has been made by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo on Wednesday, who has been accurate with his findings previously.
Kuo says that according to his survey, Apple could switch to USB Type C for iPhones by the second half of 2023 when the iPhone 15 series will most likely be announced. He says that making this switch will help iPhones deliver faster-charging speeds and data transfer rates as well.
But with a muted optimism, he adds that the final spec details will depend on iOS support for the standard charging port.
Kuo’s update comes just a few days after the EU passed legislation that forces all manufacturers to adopt USB Type C charging ports for all mobile devices. Most Android phone makers and tablet producers have made the switch, but Apple is the last on the list which is yet to make the switch.

The new order could be mandated by the time the iPhone 15 series is unveiled, so these updates from Kuo are not surprising.
Apple switching to USB Type C could finally allow the iPhone maker to push through faster-charging speeds, something that has been deprived to iPhone users for many years now. Android phone makers have upped the levels by offering charging speeds up to 150W right now. So, it is high time that Apple joins the race and gives people more reasons to buy the iPhones, especially at those hefty prices.

Google Maps is a very good tool for finding your way and going places you have not explored so far. However, not many people know that you can actually get a street view of the International Space Station from Google Maps.
Yes, Google Maps allows users to get a street view of the International Space Station (ISS), and the feature has been in place since 2017. To access it, however, you need a laptop or a computer, and go to a specific link. Users can see themselves on board the ISS, where they can explore all components of the space station, and get information at the same time. Users can tour the whole space station in 360, and can access information about components of the space station at hand on Google Maps’ street view of the ISS.
To access ISS in Street View, users need to go the link google.com/maps/space/iss on Google Maps, and they will be thrown straight into the ISS viewing deck which is also called the Cupola navigation point. From there, users can enter the space station by clicking through. You will also see information about a certain part of the ISS as soon as you hover your mouse of click on anything.

In a 2017 Blog Post, Thomas Pesquet, who is an Astronaut with the European Space Agency (ESA), said that the experience of capturing the tour “describes the feeling of being in space" better than words or a picture can." Pesquet, who helped Google collect the images from inside the space station, said that there were limitations to collecting the data. “In the six months that I spent on the International Space Station, it was difficult to find the words or take a picture that accurately describes the feeling of being in space," he said.

Instagram has a new plan to copy TikTok, and this time you are going to see all its videos and the feed in a full-screen mode. The platform has started testing out the new look and even updated the navigation bar. The updated design is available to select users for now, but Mark Zuckerberg, CEO, Meta confirmed via a post this week that others will be getting it soon as well.
This is the official update shared by Instagram on Twitter, quoting Zuckerberg’s post.

It is fair to say that Instagram is focusing on videos with its new approach and layout. “We want to make it easier to discover content and connect with friends,” Zuckerberg adds.
But he is quick to clarify that even with videos as the main focus of the full-screen mode, Instagram will look to keep photos relevant on the platform. “Photos are still an important part of Instagram, and we’re working on ways to improve the way they show up in a full-screen Feed too,” has explained.

As per the new layout, users will get to see videos in the full-screen mode, similar to how it looks on TikTok. The content changes as you scroll through the feed. Instagram says the description and other buttons used to like or comment on a video move to the bottom of the screen.
The full-screen design shown by Zuckerberg in the post fits seamlessly on a bezel-less screen, but we are not sure how it will look for those with iPhones that has a notch.
Instagram introduced Reels to take advantage of TikTok’s absence in multiple countries, including India. Reels has been a modest success for Meta, but TikTok and its growing presence in the West have overshadowed others in the business. With this new design change on the app, Meta and Zuckerberg will be hoping their fortunes with the platform also improve.
